Two North West District sprinters have booked themselves tickets to the world junior championships billed for Kenya in July.

The two sprinters, Boitshepiso Kelapile of 100 metres and Anthony Pasela of 400 meters, both from Maun Senior Secondary School, qualified during the Botswana Athletics Association (BAA) competitions held recently in Maun and Francistown respectively.

In an interview, Botswana Games North West District team general manager, Tebogo Mogaetsho said the district was proud of the duo, and that they hoped more would qualify for other major competitions.

He appreciated their qualification, saying they had proven that the district had a wealth of talent which needed to be nurtured and developed.

Mogaetsho also commended Maun Athletics Club and the coaches for a job well done, adding that after the Botswana Games, they did not rest or release athletes as it was the norm, but they kept them busy.

He stated that they would continue taking part in BAA activities, adding that he was hopeful more athletes would qualify.

The district, he said, had been doing well in athletics, noting that they had an impressive number of athletes representing the country in major competitions, citing the World Junior Championship.

“This is a great achievement for the district and I wish the Maun business community and individuals could come on board and support our youngsters efforts,” he added.

Mogaetsho also urged stakeholders to join hands with Botswana Games committee in order to unearth raw talent and polish it to compete against the world’s best.

He said there was a lot of potential in the region which needed to be exploited, and pleaded with stakeholders to appreciate the importance of sports and assist in the development of young athletes.

Mogaetsho noted that the district needed to improve in swimming and appealed to the business community to support sports and assist with a swimming pool. ENDS
