Report criminal activities - Motube
24 Feb 2020
Members of the community have been encouraged to report all kinds of criminal activities that take place at intersections.
Police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner, Dipheko Motube told BOPA in an interview recently that a lot of criminal activities go unreported, especially those that happen around intersections on Gaborone roads.
Mr Motube said the police had devised new policing strategies around the city and its environs, commonly known as greater Gaborone, by installing cameras.
He said since the introduction of closed circuit television cameras (CCTV), breaking of cars at intersections had decreased.
However, he lamented that victims did not report such cases to police stations, making it difficult to prosecute assailants.
Mr Motube said cameras were monitored throughout the day and at night and every time there was an attack on motorists at intersections, police at the control room contacted those in the field to attend to such attacks.
He said what pained them was that victims often drove away before the police arrival and when the police traced the thieves, and ultimately arrest them, they only get lesser charges such as idleness as there would be no complaint lodged.
He said the most hard hit areas were the intersections along Kudumatse Road, Airport Junction, USAID, Ghanzi Beef and Bonnington traffic lights along Molepolole road; Taung and Gabane hiking spots as well as Molapo Crossing and UN House traffic lights.
Mr Motube also appealed to members of the community to desist from posting false reports on social media, stating that it was an offence and those doing that would face the wrath of the law. ENDs
