23 Feb 2020

Good Hope Sub-district Council Chairman Mr Boniface Leshomo says they are committed to ensuring that education is accessible to all the children in their area.

Speaking during the ongoing council session at Goodhope on Thursday, Mr Leshomo stated that following the recently introduced reception classes in primary schools, out of 46 primary schools, 556 pupils in 20 schools had been enrolled in reception schools.

Furthermore, the chairperson indicated that they were committed to utilising the government initiatives to stir student’s enthusiasm for academic excellence.

He said the government was in the process of introducing fresh meat, fish, rice, macaroni and chicken to the menu.

Mr Leshomo said, among the initiatives that had been adopted by the council, was the recently introduced donkey carts transport system to provide transport as long distances had substantial effects on school attendance.

“This will be a positive development in reducing high number of dropouts and improve level of attendance,” he said.

When commenting on this initiative, the Specially Elected Councilor, Mr Fankie Motsaathebe advised that the use of donkey carts was not effective in the modern times, and it degraded students integrity.

He advised that instead the council should buy or hire transport for the school children.

Councilor for Mmathethe, Ms Kegaisitswe Ntebang applauded the government for the initiatives however she said the number of reception classes were less, given the number of primary schools in the district, therefore needed to be increased.

She hailed the initiative of providing learners with breakfast adding that the improvement of the menu would encourage them to attend school and the number of dropouts would decrease. ENDs
