Sub-district faces diarrhoea increase

18 Feb 2020

Mabutsane Sub-district is experiencing an increased number of diarrhoea cases since the end of December last year.

This was revealed by the Mabutsane Sub-council chairperson, Mr Kgopolo Ramosesane when opening the sub-council forum on Monday.

Mr Ramosesane indicated that a total of 130 cases were recorded as at the first week of February, 16 of which were dehydrated and 14 had diarrhoea.

He said that Mahotshwane, one of the remotest villages in the sub-district, was the hardest hit with 24 cases and in some instances, with rota virus found. He however, assured the councillors that no deaths were reported and that the District Health Management Team had put measures in place to contain any possible outbreak.

On other issues, Mr Ramosesane pleaded with fellow councillors to enlighten their electorate on the Refuse Bye Laws of 2018 as it had been noted that the communities were still not adhering to them, especially the one on noise and nuisance.

“Bar owners and other alcohol selling outlets are giving us a problem as they do not stick to the stipulated hours of business and this leaves the sub-council with no option but to fine them,” he said.

He said that other notable offences included failing to have waste receptacles, paying for refuse collection and failure to manage waste by the community with notable offenders being the villages of Mabutsane, Maokane, Mokhomma and Sese.

Mr Ramosesane however, noted that other bye laws such as the ones that concern street vending and hawking were doing fairly well except the fact that they were outdated.

He therefore urged the councillors to advocate for its review so that it may be relevant with the business lifestyle of the era and thus help small businesses grow. ENDs
