The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development is aware of binders or dust suppressants developed for construction of roads.

The ministry’s assistant minister, Mr Setlhabelo Modukanele said poly enzymes chemical composition on the dust road along Legolo Extension and the road after Tapologo Estates had been piloted even though they were not working.

He said instead of facilitating testing of the solutions starting with Mmopane Block 1 (Gaphatshwa) internal roads, the ministry opted to await piloting of the dust suppressing technology by the mining sector to ascertain if it was environmentally friendly and had proven results.

He further stated that the Ministry of Transport and Communications had planned to run an expression of interest in March to get proposals on the use of dust suppressants, including their impact on the environment.

The Member of Parliament for Molepolole North, Mr Oabile Regoeng had asked if he was aware of technical and cost effective solutions used to suppress dust. Mr Regoeng also wanted to know whether the local government ministry would consider facilitating the testing of solutions starting with Mmopane Block 1 internal roads. ENDS
