High water bills worrisome

22 Jan 2013

Mogoditshane/Thamaga Sub-district Council is experiencing high water bills in primary schools.

Speaking during the sub-council meeting on Monday, Major Driver Motlokwa expressed fear that the problem might result in some schools being disconnected. He said the affected primary schools were Moamogwe with a bill of P683,667, Lesirane P316,691.38, Solomon Dihutso P187,030.06, Nkoyaphiri 108,854.06 and Mogoditshane with P82,631.12.

He said high water bills should be anticipated since 12 schools had not yet been billed by Water Utilities Corporation since it took over water supply from district councils and water affairs department.

He however said the sub council would settle the bills while at the same time in the process of coming up with water conservation strategies to avert the situation. Commenting on the standard seven results, Major Motlokwa stated that the council recorded a 5.3 per cent decline during 2011/2-012 academic year.

He said the results were poor compared to the 2010/2011 academic year. He noted that the council recorded 60.1 per cent for the ABC total quality pass compared to 65.4 per cent in 2010/2011.

“The decline is mainly attributable to lack of parental involvement, lack of teachers commitment and insufficient resources which became pronounced due to the effects of economic recession in the whole country,” he said.

He implored councillors to work with parents to improve students’ academic performance. On a positive note, he expressed delight on the number of students who registered for the back to school programme. He observed that kweneng region has recorded 6 532 students for the initiative.

He said the sub council is in the process of admitting them into schools. ENDS
