Residents of Sexaxa appeal for independence
03 Feb 2020
Residents of Sexaxa in the North West District have appealed for an independent Village Development Committee (VDC).
The residents made the appeal during a kgotla meeting addressed by Maun East Member of Parliament, Mr Goretetse Kekgonegile recently.
Briefing the MP, Sexaxa VDC vice chairperson, Ms Moledi Kelejwang said the village had grown and even had a primary school, therefore it was high time it became independent from neighbouring Matlapana.
Ms Kelejwang said their village currently depended on Matlapana VDC, although they had their own interim committee.
On other issues, she said the existing VDC houses required renovation, which had been requested for, adding that the village had also long requested for two houses to cater for teachers at the newly opened primary school.
The residents also complained about delays in land allocation by Tawana Land Board.
Mr Kekgonegile informed the residents that the Minister for Land Management, Water and Sanitation Services had informed Parliament that the ministry had secured some funds to help improve land allocations in the year 2020.
Mr Kekgonegile therefore urged Sexaxa residents to remain hopeful and prepared, while encouraging the youth to apply for plots as soon as possible since the waiting period was long.
On education, the MP said all pupils’ results in the district, from primary to senior school, were poor, which was worrisome.
He appreciated the opening of a primary school in Sexaxa, which he said would relief Matlapana Primary School.
When responding to some comments, the area councillor, Mr Kobamelo Baikgodisi said he would take up the suggestion for an independent VDC with the relevant offices or present it as a council motion.
On plot allocations, Mr Baikgodisi said the land board would allocate about 3 000 plots in Sexaxa, revealing that he had request the board to give priority to Sexaxa residents. ENDS
