Mayor introduces team in Kagiso
30 Jan 2020
The mayor of Selebi Phikwe, Mr Lucas Modimana, recently addressed a kgotla meeting in Kagiso to introduce his council team to the residents.
Mr Modimana explained that the meeting was meant to introduce themselves to constituents and to give an update on issues of concern.
He challenged the youth to come up with projects that could help curb unemployment in the town, urging them to be innovative.
“Let us think outside the box,” said Mr Modimana.
He promised to request for CEDA to make special packages specific to the region in order to facilitate the funding process.
Western area Ward Development Committee chairperson, Mr Never Knight, said lack of jobs was the greatest concern to Selebi Phikwe youth.
He lamented the large number of students, who were cut off from the Selebi Phikwe Vocational Training College (VTC). He proposed an extension of courses.
He said crime was on the rise in the town, especially since closing of the BCL mine.
Mr Knight said, however, some projects such as construction of roads and maintenance of schools were accomplished.
When responding to a question on shortage of commercial plots, town clerk, Mr Stephen Motlogelwa said the youth could use available open spaces to start their businesses.
For his part, deputy clerk, Mr Domkrag Gontse said the council advocated for development of residents, hence most projects being reserved for local companies in an effort to boost them.
He said his office was aware of the fact that the 1000km desert race did not bear the anticipated fruits and advised small entrepreneurs to prepare well in time.
Furthermore, Mr Gontse said cooperation could prove beneficial for small entrepreneurs, urging residents to be on the lookout for outsider companies, who connive with some locals to win tenders unlawfully in Selebi Phikwe. ENDS
