28 Jan 2020
Local Government and Rural Development Assistant Minister, Mr Kgotla Autlwetse says some sub-districts have requested for upgrading into fully-fledged districts.
He said his ministry would embark on a comprehensive assessment of all existing sub-districts and undertake extensive consultations with the respective councils and their communities as prescribed by law under the Local Government Act of 2012.
Answering a question during the ongoing meeting of Ntlo ya Dikgosi, Mr Autlwetse said the act gave the ministry powers to establish a district council.
In establishing a district council, Mr Autlwetse said his ministry considered among others access to services through de-centralisation of services through devolution of authority and power, population size, geographical coverage and availability of resources.
He said the exercise would be carried out in a thorough and structured manner to ensure that all the requisite steps were taken as prescribed by the law.
Assistant Minister, Mr Autlwetse was responding to a question from Kgosi Itsoseng Gaoonwe from Letlhakeng region who had wanted the minister to state the requirements for upgrading a sub district to a fully-fledged district and to further state if there were any sub-districts which government had earmarked for upgrading.
