28 Jan 2020

An amount of P47 million has been released to Water Utilities Corporation (WUC) for procurement of additional water bowsers to be distributed to highly water stressed areas including Kgalagadi North Region.

Minister of Land Management Water and Sanitation Services, Mr Kefentse Mzwinila informed Ntlo Ya Dikgosi on Monday that to further alleviate water shortage, Tsabong Service Centre would be allocated four water bowsers from the batch expected to arrive in June this year.

The minister who was responding to a question from Kgosi Moeti Monyamane of Kgalagadi North, indicated that a long term solution was implementation of a project commonly known as Ncojane wellfield, which entailed equipping and connecting 10 boreholes to the whole of Kgalagadi North villages.

He, however said procurement process of the project was delayed by litigation.

Mr Mzwinila also noted that he was aware of acute shortage of water in Kgalagadi North and that most affected villages included Hukuntsi, Lokgwabe, Lehututu, Tshane and Moake.

He said the villages had a combined water demand of 12 million litres against a total supply from four boreholes of 0.576 million litres per day resulting in a deficit of 0.624 million litres a day.

Mr Mzwinila said to alleviate the situation, four bowsers had been deployed to augment supply from boreholes. The total supply augmentation is 0.1444 million litres. Kgosi Monyemane had asked if the ministry was aware of acute shortage of water for human consumption in the Kgalagadi North region and how the problem would be addressed. ENDS
