Botswana’s trio, Neo German, Leungo Monnayoo and Neo Gaobotse have booked a spot at the upcoming Africa Junior Championships.
Though, they finished as runners up to South Africa, the girls put in a stellar performance that ensured that ensured them space at the biggest tournament in Africa.
The championships are to be played sometime June, at a venue to be confirmed by Confederation of African Tennis (CAT) in North Africa.
Botswana was represented by a 12-member team comprising six boys and six girls in the Under 14 and Under 16 ITF/CAT Southern African Junior individual competition that took place from January 10 to 19 in Windhoek, Namibia.
The tournament served as stage qualifiers for the African Junior Championships. Team Botswana finished in position six out of eight countries that took part in the tournament.
The Under 14 girls finished fourth out of five countries beating only Namibia. Positions one to three went to South Africa, Zimbabwe and Madagascar respectively.
Botswana Tennis Federation spokesperson, Katlego Keagoletse stated in an interview that the team to represent Botswana at the Africa Junior Championships might increase because there was still Botswana’s finest junior champ, who is also the number two seed in Africa Juniors, Denzel Seetso.
He said they would be accompanied by Mark Nawa, who finished number five in the Under 14 boy’s category.
Seetso missed the Windhoek tourney due to an arm injury he sustained in Florida, USA playing the Orange Bowl Championships last year. ENDS
