21 Jan 2020

Meepong and Makhubu junior secondary schools in Selebi Phikwe occupy positions four and eight respectively in the Botswana Examinations Council’s 10 outstanding schools.

Meepong recorded a pass rate of 73.6 and Makhubu 67.9 per cent.

In an interview, Selebi Phikwe sub-region’s principal education officer, Mr Jacob Kebalebile commended all the six secondary schools in Selebi Phikwe for a job well done, noting that they all made it in the Central Region’s top 10.

Mr Kebalebile said more needed to be done to attain the 80 per cent target set by the sub region that eluded all six.

He said the sub-region observed a slight decline in this year’s results with Meepong declining from 73.9 in 2018 to 73.6 per cent and Makhubu dropping from 70.4 in 2018 to 67.9 per cent this year.

Phatsimo JSS, which scooped position four in the Central region, dropped from 68.9 to 61.5 per cent.

Mr Kebalebile was concerned that the town recorded many Cs and several ungraded mark with no merit but 26 As, resulting in an overall performance of 57.9 compared to last year’s 61.3 per cent.

He said for the sub-region to maintain good performance, it would have come up with interventions involving the pupils, teachers and parents.

Of the six schools in Selebi Phikwe, Makhubu produced 10 As, Meepong seven, Phatsimo two Mojamorago and Lebogang three each and Boikhutso one.

Mr Kebalebile challenged the sub-region to turn the Cs into As and Bs.

He also commended the primary schools for a job well done, noting that they all attained more than 80 per cent pass rate and urged secondary schools to do likewise. ENDS
