Phikwe scoops position one in PSLE

10 Dec 2019

Selebi Phikwe Sub-region has once again scooped position one, beating all the 250 primary schools in the central region.

The central region is made up of nine sub regions of Selebi Phikwe, Palapye, Mahalapye, Sefhare, Tutume, Tonota, Boteti, Bobirwa and Shoshong.

Chief education officer for Selebi Phikwe, Mr Elisha Masedi said in an interview that he was impressed about the performance in the just released PSLE results, saying it showed commitment and hard work by both pupils and teachers.

Mr Masedi said the sub region attained 93.12 per cent ABC, an increase from last year’s 89.66 per cent.

Two Selebi Phikwe schools, Botshabelo and Tebogo primary schools have a 100 per cent pass rate. The two schools also attained 100 per cent in 2018 with 89.3 per cent pass rate.

Mr Masedi said the sub region has developed a strong culture of excellence and has always been doing well in all levels of education.

He noted that all the 11 primary schools in the mining town have exceeded the national target of 76 per cent.

He said most schools also managed to meet the 90 per cent regional target except for Segomotso, Reuben Mpabanga and Boswelakgomo primary schools.

Mr Masedi attributed the outstanding performance of the sub region to the dedication and commitment shown by parents, teachers and pupils.

“We covered the syllabus early and managed to have ample time for revision,” he said.

He thanked parents and other stakeholders such as Selebi Phikwe Town Council for supporting academic initiatives.

“We have an active stakeholder participation and we are grateful for that.”

However, Mr Masedi decried low number of pupils in some schools as a result of transfers.

He said the most affected schools were Tebogo and Reuben Mpabanga with only 59 and 47 pupils who sat for the 2019 PSLE examinations respectively.

He said the two schools used to have a high number of pupils, but that the numbers declined drastically following the closure of the BCL mine. ENDS
