The chairperson of Bagolo Khumo ya Ngwao Society, Ms Gerliah Mokgweetsi has underscored the need to appreciate senior citizens given the pivotal role they played in the development of the country.
She made the remarks during the 7th annual elderly appreciation day organised by the organization in Maun recently.
Bagolo Khumo Ya Ngwao Society was formed in 2012 and with the aim of ensuring that elderly people are catered for emotionally, psychologically, socially and mentally.
Ms Mokgweetsi explained that the event was held to bring elders together to interact, as well as to share ideas and experiences to improve their wellbeing.
She said elders were the pillars of the society as they played a key role in raising and moulding children adding that some had raised prominent members of the society.
Likewise, she said they deserved to be loved and cared for. One of the elders, Mr Bishop Maphane expressed gratitude for the event saying it gave them an opportunity to see each other after a long time.
He appreciated the organisers’ efforts stating that the initiative was ideal as it could enhance cooperation and unity in the community. The organisation was reported to be looking for a plot to construct a centre which would accommodate elders who do not receive proper care at homes.
He wished they could secure a plot and assist elders whose children had neglected them.
He appealed to Village Development Committees (VDCs), traditional leaders and other local authorities to support the organisation as it was doing a great job. Mr Maphane also appealed to the business community to come on board and assist the organisation.
The event was supported by The Voice Newspaper, Debonairs Pizza and Love Botswana who donated food and groceries as a way of appreciating the elderly. ENDS
