Isimemezelo Zion Church of God donated food and blankets to 61 beneficiaries in Matlhakola over the weekend.
When handing over the donation, the Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Sethabelo Modukanele commended the church for the gesture.
He said the move was in line with the human and social development pillar of Vision 2036.
The churche raised P13 469 sourced from contributions and the beneficiaries were identified by Social and Community Development Department under Palapye Sub-district Council.
Mr Modukanele said through the donation, the church was responding to government’s plea to respect and care for the needy and vulnerable.
He said the donation demonstrated that Christianity work was not confined to the church and such reaffirmed the solid and strong partnership between government and the church.
The assistant minister indicated that the donation was the third by the church after it donated to Kudumatse and Makwate, an effort he said deserved recognition.
He was optimistic that the donation would prompt other churches to do likewise.
Mr Modukanele stated that December was a month for commemorating HIV/AIDS and called on residents to take responsibility and stop the spread of the virus.
The first case in Botswana, he said, was recorded in 1985 and more infections were recorded over the years. More than 300 000 people live with HIV in Botswana.
For his part, Archbishop Motshereganyi Kooitse indicated that out of the 61 beneficiaries, 15 were people living with disabilities, 21 destitute persons and 35 orphans.
He said the church intended to continue assisting the less privileged.
He said the country’s leadership had demonstrated and taught citizens to be compassionate and caring to fellow citizens. Area councillor, Mr Dikakanyo Mojaphiri said the move encouraged unity and compassion among the community.
He said God was the answer to all challenges. Ends
