Disaster management office issues safety tips

03 Dec 2019

Members of the public are informed that rains accompanied by strong winds and lightning are expected from Wednesday December 4 to Friday December 6.

National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) has issued a statement to the effect that heavy falls of 50mm or more are expected over most parts of the country in a 24-hour period and that such weather conditions might lead to flooding in some areas.

In light of this, the public is urged to excise caution during these times and take the following precautions amongst others; people must be vigilant when approaching and crossing fast flowing streams and rivers, should not walk, swim or drive through flooded areas, should avoid low-lying bridges and children should not be allowed to play near flood waters.

The statement also cautions drivers not to park under trees as there is a danger of falling branches and debris.

Members of the public are also advised to unplug electrical appliances before the storm arrives as they might be damaged by lightning.

They should also stay away from downed power lines and should notify the relevant authorities in case they notice such.

The statement also encourages public members to listen to radios, watch television weather bulletins and spot announcements on possible flooding in their respective areas.

The public is also advised that should they require any assistance due to possible flooding in their areas, they should contact the district commissioner’s office, area social worker, kgosi or the nearest police station.

The NDMO, together with relevant stakeholders promises to continue monitoring the situation closely. Ends
