Good deeds deserve praise

01 Dec 2019

Good samaritans have been urged to see as valuable their efforts of benevolence, no matter how modest they may appear.

This was said by Mabutsane Sub district social welfare officer, Ms Nankandi Machana during a ceremony in which St John Apostolic Church of The Whole World donated groceries to 15 needy persons from Jwaneng, Sese and Sekoma.

Ms Machana said donors often underrated their deeds just because what they donated seemed small, but said such small efforts were often a sign of bigger things to follow.

“Even the Bible indicates that God trusts us with smaller tasks before he can give us bigger ones. So this modest donation is an indication that the church will in future assist with something bigger,” she said.

Ms Machana also said assistance from good samaritans was welcome by their department, as they were overwhelmed by the number of needy persons they could not assist because of budgetary constraints.

“As a department we operate within budget and sometimes were are constrained in assisting all those that deserve. This often causes conflict between members of the community and our department because we are forced to strictly comply with our policies of assessment while they may think that we are not willing to assist them. So such assistance as this one will do a great deal in relieving the S&CD,” she said.

Another S&CD officer from Maokane, Ms Thabiso Tlou also applauded the church for its helping hand, saying it was noble of the church not to only be concerned with teaching the gospel, but thinking of the less privileged as well.

She said the gesture was consistent with the Bible that the church read. Ms Tlou also raised concern on the tendency by beneficiaries to sell the groceries they were assisted with, saying that such should cease as it defeated the purpose of the assistance.

One of the church elders, Ms Ipeleng Motang advised churches that it was their responsibility to help society as the gesture would also help the church be appreciated and respected.ENDS
