Govt recognises Bayei kgosi
01 Dec 2019
Bayei people are recognised under the provisions of Section 3 of Bogosi Act of 2008, says Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Kgotla Autlwetse.
Responding to a question in Parliament from Member of Parliament for Ngami, Mr Kainangura Hikuama, Mr Autlwetse said the terms and conditions of the recognition of their kgosi were very specific such that they did not prejudice the status and operations of existing tribal administrative structures and hierarchy.
He further said there were no plans to provide for another kgotla office as Gumare already had an office.
He added that there would be no official payment effected as the recognition did not in any way confer rights and privileges that were not otherwise granted and/or conferred by any existing law. Mr Hikuama had asked the minister to update Parliament when he would accord Bayei kgosi an official status enjoyed by other recognised dikgosi. He also asked the minister to consider providing office space for the Gumare kgosi to duly conduct his duties and affairs.ENDS
