Molale clarifies council nominations

20 Nov 2019

A total of 119 councillors will be nominated for the  57 constituencies for the 2019 -2024 period, the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Eric Molale has said.

Mr Molale explained that the minister nominated specially nominated councillors through recommendations from district commissioners and Members of Parliament as per Section 13 sub-sections 1 and 2 of the Local Government Act 2012.

He said there might be a consideration for political inclusion and partisan balance in the nominations.

“The party majorities arising from the results of the 2019 general election in the various local authorities will not be overturned through nomination. In this regard, we will respect the power balance as determined by the electorate,” he said.

Furthermore, Mr Molale stated that he could not state with certainty the total number of applications received as the submission of applications for the specially nominated councillors was yesterday and the nominations would be announced once the process was complete.

Mr Molale was responding to a question by Maun West MP, Mr Dumelang Saleshando who had wanted to know the total number of councillors that would be nominated to each local authority for 2019-2024 period.

Mr Saleshando had also requested the minister to explain the procedure followed for one to be nominated as a councillor and whether there would be any consideration for political inclusion and partisan balance in the nominations. Ends
