Ministry to refurbish Shoshong Senior Secondary School
20 Nov 2019
Ministry of Infrastructure and Housing Development undertook a conditional survey in August and prepared a full scope of work that is required to restore Shoshong Senior Secondary School.
Answering a question in Parliament, Minister of Basic Education, Mr Fidelis Molao, said his ministry was aware of dilapidation of the school facilities and attempts were being made to refurbish them.
He said out of the six laboratories, two had already been maintained while the remaining four would be attended to and laboratory equipment replaced before end of this financial year.
Mr Molao said the total cost estimate for works that still needed to be undertaken at the school was about P80 million.
The project had not been budgeted for owing to funding constraints, however, he said his ministry would continue to engage relevant stakeholders for the project to be undertaken in a phased approach during the National Development Plan (NDP) 11 planning period.
He noted that his ministry had provided the school with funds under recurrent budget to undertake maintenance of medical installation at the cold room, the boys’ and girls’ hostels and maintenance of aluminium windows at student residences.
Mr Molao said these minor works were completed and handed over to the school, adding that once major maintenance work was done, a safe and conducive learning environment would be created.
Shoshong MP, Mr Aubrey Lesaso had asked the minister to update Parliament on the state of Shoshong Senior Secondary School by specifically addressing ill-equipped laboratories’, dilapidated classrooms, dilapidated residential hostels and staff houses, other areas in need of attention and government plans to make the school safe and habitable.
