Goshwe community restores Mokaraoke dignity
19 Nov 2019
Christmas could not have come earlier for Ms Tuelo Mokaraoke and her family as Goshwe Village Development Committee (VDC) in partnership with the community and village extension team (VET) built her a house.
Handing over the house to the needy single mother of six on November 16 at Goshwe, VDC treasurer Ms Unami Mokhwe said they selected the beneficiary with the help of the social worker.
Previously, she had a hut that got dilapidated and collapsed, leaving her homeless.
She said when the committe members were elected into office last year, they decided to be an example to their community by doing something remarkable, hence building the one-roomed house paired with a traditional hut.
She revealed that they started off by contributing money from their pockets.
Upon realising that they would not meet their target of completing the house before the rainy season, they appealed for support from other stakeholders within and outside their village such as Tutume.
She stated that the general public paid heed to their plea for helping one of them who is need, a feature she said made their work easier.
The VDC member said they received building materials and any other necessities for the project to take off with others pledging their labour to build the concrete house and the traditional mud house.
In no time, she said their efforts paid off as they managed to finish the project and help their beneficiary to shelter her children and grandchildren.
Meanwhile, VET chairperson, also Goshwe junior school head Mr Bikani Bengani said government was making efforts to provide shelter for the needy citizens, stressing that given the growing numbers government could not manage alone.
Mr Bengani said this called for the general public to extend a helping hand.
He said what they had done had uplifted the family of Mokaraoke and appealed to others to help to other disadvantaged persons.
He further said it would also motivate others across the country to look for those in need within their communities and do something remarkable as well.
Appreciating their gesture, Ms Mokaraoke promised to look after their house at all times and also help in the community when need arises. Ends
