Police records two fatal accidents

Maun police have recorded two fatal road accidents that claimed two lives  over the weekend.

Assistant superintendent Borefeletse Papane revealed in an interview that a 56-year-old woman, who was jogging along Sekgoma Road next to Botswana Meat Commission Club died on the spot after a Nissan car hit her in the early hours November 17.

He said the incident occurred when the Nissan driver’s female companion pulled the steering wheel resulting in the driver losing control of the vehicle. It was reported that the duo had a misunderstanding.

Assistant Superintendent Papane said the vehicle veered off the road and hit the woman, who hails from Matshwane ward in Maun.

In another mishap, a Gaborone-bound passenger bus hit a 63-year-old man, who died on the spot around 8.30pm.

The incident happened at Samedupi village along the Maun-Francistown road and the driver of the bus reported the incident to the police.

 Still at Maun, a 37-year-old woman of Kgosing ward was reported to be recuperating at Letsholathebe Memorial Hospital after appears to be a hit and run incident.

According to Assistant Superintendent Papane, the police received a report from a passerby who saw the victim struggling to move along Pulane Road at Mabudutsa ward.

The passerby rushed the victim, who sustained serious head injuries, to the hospital.

He appealed to the community to join hands with police in the search for the vehicle that hit her.

Assistant Superintendent Papane also appealed to drivers to exercise caution, especially at night, noting that they should also be on the lookout for animals.

He also urged drivers to always obey road signs to avoid accidents. 

On another issue, police had recorded an incident in which a 37-year-old man of Tonota was attacked by a hippo while fishing at Chanoga.

Assistant Superintendent Papane said the victim sustained serious injuries on the back and thighs. `the man’s canoe was also damaged during the attack. Ends
