Rollers prevail over Gaborone United
11 Nov 2019
The war expected in the Gaborone derby between Township Rollers and Gaborone United ladies never materialised as the duo played dull football, despite Rollers emerging victorious with a 2-0 score in the Gaborone Region women football league game at Lekidi on November 10.
Their encounter failed to leave up to expectations from the onset. Both teams started on a low tempo and each side seemed fearful of the other, a trait pundits attributed to the two sides’ defensive play.
However, Refilwe Tholakelo broke the ice in the 21st minute to give Township Rollers the lead, and the goal seemed to have breathed life into both teams and a wakeup call for GU who started to surge forward looking for an equaliser. Unfortunately poor finishing denied them goals.
By recess the score sheet read 1-0. From the break, Gaborone United seemed determined to cause an upset given their fighting spirit, but Rollers’ compact defence led by Kesegofetse Mochawe was equal to the task.
Two minutes before full-time, Mochawe received a beautiful pass from Tholakelo and she wasted no time and netted to give her side three valuable points.
Rollers win did not help as they moved from position four to six after accumulating nine points in five games.
They have won three and lost two games.
