Botswana Premier league’s celebrated football tournament Mascom Top 8 is back once again with the launch of Season 9, which will see teams fight for the coveted cup.
Speaking during the season’s launch and draw of teams in Gaborone on Tuesday, acting chairperson of Mascom Wireless, Dzene Makhwade announced commitments of P1.4 million compared to the previous P1.3 million towards the cash prize monies that the teams will battle for.
She said the commitment was meant to ensure that the Mascom top 8 cup remains attractive to the Botswana Premier League, Botswana Football Association and all other stakeholders and also for the betterment of football in the country.
She further said they had made more improvement to this season of the cup such as the unveiling of a new gold trophy and more community outreach programmes to generate more interest for the tournament.
Furthermore, Makhwade noted that overall prizes for the winners would increase to P243 000 with the number one player walking away with P55 000 as compared to P50 000 from season one.
She encouraged teams to take advantage of the tournament in order to acquire more resources for their development.
This season’s quarter final draw paired Orapa United with Security Systems while Molepole City Stars will play against two time top 8 champions, Township rollers.
Moreover, Defending champions, Jwaneng Galaxy will meet Gaborone United, whom they beat to be crowned Season 8 champions.
The draw also pitted BDF XI against Police XI.

“As we launch Season 9 of the Mascom Top 8, we anticipate a bigger, better, and more interesting football spectacle as is the norm,” he said.
He said this year’s sponsorship improvement showed Mascom’s commitment towards the development of sports in Botswana.
