In recognition of the role that sport plays in human development, Debswana has over the years showed support to sport development.

Speaking during the eighth Debswana boxing awards sponsorship launch, Debswana corporate affairs manager, external communications, Agatha Sejoe, said a significant portion of the company’s corporate social investment and sponsorship funds were invested in the sport.

The awards would be held in Gaborone on November 23.

“This is some of our many deliberate initiatives that aim to recognise and reward excellence and most importantly to demonstrate our organisational values, particularly those shaping the future, being passionate and showing we care tour communities,” said Sejoe.

Sejoe said Debswana and Botswana Boxing Association (BoBA) had, since 2010, enjoyed strong relationship characterised by common interest and sincere trust as evidenced by this year’s sponsorship launch.

She said it was their desire that the Debswana BoBA awards achieved a number of key goals that were aligned to sponsorship objectives.

She added that they were meant to recognise the excellence of both athletes and officials, motivate athletes (both active and aspiring boxers) to consider sport as a full-time career.

Sejoe re-assured that Debswana would continue to remain committed to support the growth of boxing across the country.

The partnership saw the launch of the Re Ba Bona Ha boxing centre in Molepolole, which would ensure the growth of grassroots development within communities.

Sejoe announced that this year’s sponsorship was P300 000, which she considered a milestone from the P50 000 sponsorship agreement when the journey started in 2010.

For his part, BoBA acting president, Gilbert Khunwane, said the event offered his organisation an opportunity to reflect on its growth and development patterns so as to apply them as benchmarks when they sit to plan the programmes for the years to come.

“As BoBA we would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the efforts of Debswana for making our past and present years special to recognize all those who have the passion and commitment to achieve their dreams through sport.  We have seen that persons can achieve the best positions in life as sport has immensely contributed to their strong personality and character building,” he added.
