Kgosi Mosadi Seboko of Balete says there is need to strengthen families through encouragement of marriages in order to build a strong society.

Kgosi Mosadi, who was welcoming President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi and First Lady Neo Masisi to a kgotla meeting in Ramotswa on October 8, hailed the first family as an inspiration to many, encouraging the community members to also look up to them.

Kgosi Masadi stated that peaceful families contributed towards the building of a peaceful society.

She said Batswana should not take the prevailing peace for granted as it had eluded many countries.

Kgosi Mosadi said her just-ended appointment at the Pan African Parliament had been an eye-opener on what the absence of peace could bring to a country.

She also thanked the government for having appointed her to represent the country at the forum, which she said showed trust that the government had on her and Balete.

Kgosi Mosadi said her appointment was not only about representing the country, but also contributing towards building peace in Africa. At the Pan African Parliament, Kgosi Mosadi was a member of the Committee on Gender, Family, Youth and People with Disabilities.

Among other issues, the committee deals with issues relating to the promotion of gender equality and assists the parliament to oversee the development of AU policies and activities relating to family, youth and people with disabilities.

She said unlike many countries, Botswana had a good track record of sustained peace and stability, which were derived from the kgotla set-up that encouraged freedom of expression.

For his part, President Masisi assured Batswana of sustained peace and stability and noted that the 1994 Rwanda genocide was a clear example of what could happen in the abcence of peace. Therefore, President Masisi called on the country to shun any efforts to fuel and spread hatred and anger.

He stated that war and unrest had devastating effects, hence the need for all to accept the outcome of any democratic process. ENDS
