Police in Ramotswa are investigating the death of a 19-year-old Kanye girl believed to have committed suicide on Independence Day in Ramotswa.

Station commander, Superintendent Keoagile Tau said the teenager hanged herself inside her boyfriend’s house in a wardrobe at Ramotswa’s Lesetlhana Ward where she was visiting.

It is reported that the two had gone out for the night but the deceased had later returned to the boyfriend’s house on her own.

Supt Tau said the deceased did not leave a note to explain her action adding that the boyfriend had indicated they did not have any conflict.

The boyfriend is said to have told police that the girl had hinted at social problems back home in Kanye where there had been unfruitful reconciliation efforts.

Meanwhile, Supt Tau has cautioned community members against taking their own lives, saying such decisions caused more problems than solutions. 

Nevertheless, Supt Tau said compared to other jurisdictions,  suicide incidents were not high in his area adding that it registered 12 cases in 2016, eight in 2017 and six in 2018.

He said the Independence Day incident was the first this year and was therefore hopeful that suicide was on the decline. ends
