Technological training to improve construction

Minister of Transport and Communications, Ms Dorcas Makgato said training of human resource in the use of modern technology, especially in road construction and maintenance management will help Botswana to improve road construction programme.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of 30-day road design and management course recently, Minister Makgato said the seminar came at the right time as Botswana was trying to diversify her economy so that it was not dependent on minerals.

To achieve this, she said there was need  for improved  transport and communications infrastructure.

Ms Makgato  said the Chinese government had offered Botswana a grant, which would be used for training, saying  for a country ‘to become economically rich, you should improve your roads infrastructure.’

She also said Botswana was grateful that  China which  was the world's leader in the development of modern road network had agreed to assist by sharing knowledge by conducting training in Botswana, which maximised the number of trainees who participated in the course.

“The training offered participants an opportunity to engage in matters affecting design, maintenance and implementation and road projects,” she said.

The course focused on several aspects of transportation industry which included geology engineering in road construction, International highway construction technology, standards and implementation, highway construction management and Design as well as implementation of road safety facilities in China.
