Govt serious about workforce wellness

16 Sep 2019

Government is committed to supporting a healthy and productive workforce as well as refining programmes geared at improving wellness in the workplace.

Director in the Ministry of Agricultural Development and Food Security, Ms Gaokgakala Rammidi said this at the Southern District’s wellness day and prize giving ceremony in Moshupa recently.

Ms Rammidi commended the hosts for taking employees’ wellness earnestly, thus encouraged them to host the wellness day more often because such activities improved their dynamism in executing duties and driving their mandates.

The event was held under the theme ‘With Sport, It Ends With Me’.

Ms Rammidi therefore encouraged employees to take care for their bodies by resorting to proper diet, adequate sleep and regular exercise.

“Exercise improves a person’s mood or morale and relaxes the mind.

It is therefore commendable to see most of you present for body workout and exercises,” she said.

Further, she implored employees to be wary of their relationships with other people, saying, ‘we have to be mindful of the people that we associate with and weed out toxic relationships.”

Also, she indicated that components of wellness encompassed a person’s physical, emotional and spiritual well-being, stressing the importance of leading a healthy life in order to be successful both at work and home.

On employees’ performance, Ms Rammidi commended the Southern region for excelling and outshining others at the public service awards last year, saying that made the region proud after being capped the best district.

That, she said also demonstrated hard work, commitment and efforts, which the region had in taking services to the people.

However, she emphasised the need to double efforts in order to maintain the district’s good performance.

Southern District agricultural coordinator, Ms Monia Mfolwe commended the staff for their team spirit and commitment in hosting the prize giving ceremony despite financial challenges they were faced with.

“Our mission is to have the wellness activity annually, with or without funds as we take matters of wellness seriously,” Ms Mfolwe said.

Ms Mfolwe also encouraged the spirit of forgiveness among employees as well as embracing one another to be able to work as a team.

“Botswana in all aspects is based on agriculture.

If we cannot embrace one another, our efforts to deliver our mandate will be in vain.

Let us continue helping our clients with ease, efficiently and on time and further understand that it is our duty to assist them,” she said.

On other issues, she encouraged them to engage stakeholders, particularly financial institutions, to teach them about issues of finances.

Ms Mfolwe further advised those who did not get awards not to despair.

Instead, she said they should be motivated to work even harder so that they also make it to the top and be rewarded accordingly. ENDS
