Ghanzi East struggles with waste collection
11 Sep 2019
Ghanzi East Sub-District Council is experiencing challenges in waste collection, according to chairperson Mr Dichaba Thupe.
In his opening remarks during a sub-council session on September 10, Mr Thupe said the council had one compactor truck that was used for both the township and 10 settlements.
He told councillors that they managed to secure funds to procure refuse compactor truck to rescue the situation and the tender was still at evaluation stage.
Nonetheless, he said the cleanliness level in the township was rated at 86 per cent and he was impressed by the performance of the township in the national clean up competitions since it scooped position one in 2017 and position two in 2018.
He also stated that plans were underway to outsource waste collection in one section of the township and the tender for outsourcing was closed on August 22.
The outsourcing of waste collection in the township, he said, would commence on a small scale due to budgetary constraints.
Mr Thupe said two wards,;Morama and Bosele, would be outsourced for fiscal year 2019/2020.
This, he said, would help in improving cleanness of the township, thus adding more on economic activities in the local authority.
The chairperson also stated that the 20 donkey carts beneficiaries in 10 settlements were paid P1 500 per month.
On other issues, he said construction of 10 classrooms and a laboratory at Itekeng was under way and they were expecting a contractor to be engaged for major maintenance at Ghanzi senior school.
On Omang collection, he said 200 identity cards remained uncollected, “…they might be the critical vote we needed most.”
He said recruitment of poll staff was ongoing and training of such personnel would be done during the month of October with the exception of returning officers training, which will be on the September 20.
Mr Thupe said a deliberate decision that was taken during previous elections of increasing number of poll staff would still apply, so as to speed up the voting process.
He said this time polling stations will be manned by two presiding officers and at least four polling officers, while constituency and polling district counting centers will have fifteen and nine tallying officers, respectively. ENDS
