Strategic plan to transform Botswana

11 Sep 2019

Education and Training Sector Strategic Plan (ETSSP) is intended to transform Botswana into a knowledge-based society.

Onrock Engineering managing director, Mr Ontlametse Mmopiemang, said this during Swaneng Hill Senior Secondary School prize giving ceremony in Serowe recently.

Mr Mmopiemang, who is a former pupil at the school, said to succeed in the global marketplace, Botswana would need to continue making substantial investments in education and training as well as through acquiring entrepreneurial, managerial and technological capabilities.

He noted that development of a five-year strategic plan would have far-reaching effects on the future of education in Botswana since it sets out many of the challenges facing the sector and the varied strategies, programmes and activities to resolve them.

“The ETSSP is an extensive undertaking that addresses a number of pillars such as improving access, quality, inclusion and equity, accountability and governance in the education system,’’ he said.

Mr Mmopiemang said the plan identified areas of strategic priority in order to focus resources on areas that would contribute most in enhancing the quality of learning at different levels in the education system.

Mr Mmopiemang added that implementing the ETSSP would require transformation of the current management system of the education sector.

He also said the nation needed to be continually informed about demands of the labour market and what opportunities were available to them for reshaping and making them relevant to the market.

The head teacher of Swaneng Hill school, Ms Mamuki Autlwetse, indicated that the school strived to produce a learner who would find purpose in society.

She said the current national debate could be summed up by Education and Training Sector Strategic Plan, which was  intrinsically interwoven output based education.

Ms Autlwetse said Parents Teachers Associations (PTAs), member of parliament’s office, kgotla and community were also helping. ENDS
