Some beneficiaries of the Poverty Eradication programme in the Southern district have commended the government for initiatives that impact positively in their lives. They shared their testimonies at the National Agricultural Poverty Eradication day, which was held in Lotlhakane West under the theme: Commit to End Poverty Through Agriculture.
One of the beneficiaries of the backyard garden, Ms Masego Maboa of Kanye said despite water shortage, she had persevered to ensure that her business grew from what it was when she started operating in 2012.
She said over the years, she had used profits to build herself a decent house, put her children through school while at the same time saving for rainy days.
She also said she was anticipating more growth as she was currently supplying local schools with a variety of vegetables and herbs.
She urged beneficiaries to show commitment towards their businesses and be passionate about what they do despite the challenges they faced.
Another Moshupa-based horticulture beneficiary, Ms Selinah Logare said her life had improved since she enrolled in the programme last year. She said her garden currently consisted of over 500 plants. Ms Logare appreciated the support she got from her clients, which she said had helped her buy a lot of things for her house, including furniture.
She also said water shortage did not hamper her efforts as she was dedicated to seeing her life improve. Mr Kobamo Obusitse who ventured into beekeeping in 2008 said he had been able to live a dignified life.
However, he noted that lack of rainfall has resulted in the migration of bees because their feeds were now scarce.
Mr Obusitse was optimistic that the situation would improve once it started raining.
The Ministry of Agricultural Development and Food Security deputy permanent secretary Mr Thabang Botshoma urged Batswana to take advantage of such initiatives intended to eradicate poverty.
He implored young people to venture into agribusinesses to create employment for themselves and others.
He said over 20 000 people had benefited since the inception of the programme.
Mr Botshoma underscored the need to support the government’s intention of using agriculture to develop the country and improve the economy. ENDS
