08 Sep 2019
The North West District Council (NWDC) in collaboration with the village leadership and the community is on a mission to tidy Maun.
The campaign themed, Together Towards a Cleaner Maun, aims to bring stakeholders together in making the village clean and a destination of choice.
NWDC chairperson, Mr Duncan Enga stated that it was the council’s duty to make the community aware of the consequences of living in unkept surroundings as well as to encourage them to ensure their homesteads were clean.
He said a dirty environment was a result of improper disposal of waste as well as shortage of suitable waste cans around Maun.
Mr Enga said the council had installed waste cans in Disana, Sanyedi as well as Boyei wards to address the challenge.
He encouraged the community to pay for waste collection, which was charged at P120 annually and also reminded them about the Polluter Pay Principle, which cautions community members of littering or improper handling of waste materials.
The council chairperson appreciated a donation of 40 waste cans by the Civil Aviation Authority and another 300 by Cresta Riley’s Hotel.
He pleaded with other companies to come on board and assist the council clean Maun.
Such, he said, was important given that the Ngami District was prone to Malaria.
Government departments were also encouraged to work together to ensure functioning of committees that assisted to convey messages of a clean environment to members of the community.
Mr Enga also mentioned that the council would implement policies to address a clean environment and proper waste management.
He said they were trying to see how the life of the landfill could be prolonged.
The BUY BACK initiative, also encourages environmental cleanliness as the council would be buying waste collected by community members. Ends
