Relocation exercise to delay - DC

05 Sep 2019

The relocation exercise to the newly established at Xorotsha settlement in the Ngamiland District will commence after the 2019 general elections.

The district commissioner, Mr Keolopile Leipego revealed in an interview that the decision to carry out the exercise after elections was meant to allow the settlers to vote at the areas where they registered.

He said they did not want to inconvenience them in any way, adding that the exercise may continue into the early months of 2020. Initially, the relocation exercise was supposed to start end of the year up to beginning of next year.

Mr Leipego stated that the resettlement would specifically target about 341 people, who are currently squatting in the Xorotsha area around boreholes/cattleposts of Splanplek, Romane, Mathomahibidu, Xoga, Kawekeno and Masogwana. He clarified that Xorotsha was not open to the general public to apply for residential plots as it was specific for the families making up the 341 only. The settlement is situated on the western side of Kareng village, some 30km away from Qabo settlement in the Ghanzi district.

The settlement was conceived as a Presidential decision to accommodate about 300 people so that they access basic services in the Rural Area Dwellers (RADs) category.

It was earlier reported that a lot of progress had been achieved at the settlement as about 18 houses with toilets and fenced yards had been completed and water connected.

This year, five more houses would be constructed. It was also reported that the council was in the process of mobilising the communities so that they could be allocated the houses. The council has also embarked on a massive assessment to cross check what residents have in order to cater for all their belongings. ends
