Stakeholder participation and volunteerism are key to academic excellence.

The former vice president, Dr Ponatshego Kedikilwe, said this during Sedimo Hill Junior Secondary School 30th anniversary and prize giving ceremony in Mogapi, recently.

Dr Kedikilwe said it was through the spirit of volunteerism, self-reliance and unity that the school was established, highlighting that his wife volunteered on many occasions.

“We built a kitchen shelter for this school as the board of governors alongside the community of Mogapi,” said Dr Kedikilwe.

He said the community was equally important in the quest to educate children.

The school head, Ms Marina Mbulawa, said despite the school’s unsatisfactory performance in last year’s JC Examinations, as it attained a 44 per cent pass rate, compared to the 48 per cent pass rate of 2017, she was optimistic that it could do much better.

“We are not satisfied with these results, we are devising strategies to improve the results, as teachers and pupils of Sedimo Hill, we are committed to reach a 50 per cent pass rate in our next JC examination,” she said.

She added that the school was not doing well in sports, although children were given the platform to compete with other schools.

Ms Mbulawa cited the shortage of classrooms, staff accommodation and lack of water and gas in the Science lab as the main challenges at Sedimo Hill.

She said, on the positives, the school gained an additional classroom, while the machine room was refurbished through the Constituency Fund initiative.

The school head advised parents to take keen interest in their children’s studies to facilitate good academic results. Ends
