Society to hold renal conference in November

01 Sep 2019

The Nephrology Society of Botswana (NeSBo) is to hold its second conference in November 15-17 in Kasane.

In an interview with the event organiser Ms Kagiso Motsumi, NeSBo was formed by a group of health care professionals and stakeholders to advance kidney health in Botswana through advocacy and education.

She said with the growing number of people adopting unhealthy lifestyles there was a higher prevalence of chronic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

“This has led to a marked increase in kidney diseases and the number of people enrolling in kidney treatments such as dialysis and kidney transplants,” Ms Motsumi said.

She said in response Botswana International Renal Conference (BIRC) was established to bring together professionals involved in renal care to share ideas and showcase the latest technologies and interventions available to patients in Africa and the world at large.

Ms Motsumi said the conference was hosted in Botswana by NeSBo every two years with the inaugural one having been held in 2017 in Gaborone.

She said this year’s conference will be held under the theme: Kidney Health for Everyone – Solutions for Africa.

Ms Motsumi said they were expecting 150 delegates, among them, physicians, pharmacists, dieticians, oncologists, general practitioners, nurses, educators, researchers and caretakers from both the private and government sector. ENDS
