Majwe Mining establishes relations with Lefhoko
29 Aug 2019
As part of efforts to engage local communities, Majwe Mining Joint Venture recently donated clothing items to the underprivileged learners of Lefhoko Primary School.
At the event, one of the company’s employees, Ms Neo Moswete, a maintenance dispatcher, also adopted one underprivileged family in Lefhoko and donated grocery worth P2 000, with a commitment to keep donating monthly grocery worth P1 000 for the whole year.
Speaking at the event, Majwe Mining’ acting project director, Mr Matthew Henderson said the gesture by the employees was welcome and supported and encouraged by the company under its corporate social responsibility initiative.
“We have a programme called staff volunteerism where our compassionate employees dedicate their time, identify worthy projects and give back to the less privilege members of our communities. We as Majwe support these initiatives fully and wholeheartedly,” he said.
Mr Henderson added that the gesture was in line with the Vision 2036 pillar of human social development, and encouraged other individuals and the business community to ensure that the pillar was achieved through participation.
Mr Henderson also said it was their hope that their donation would help in ensuring that the underprivileged learners would not have to face the prejudice of being poor, which might take away their dignity and self-esteem.
He said the donation would also help save parents the shame of being unable to provide for their children. Mr Henderson expressed pride in Majwe Mining employees, saying they were compassionate and willing to give back to communities in their spare time. He assured the village leadership that his company would always be there if the village needed assistance.
He also said gestures of compassion by companies and individuals were necessary to relief government the burden of social upliftment. He added that his company would continue to play a role in the lives of nearby communities within which they operated.
Kgosi Biki Nthomang of Lefhoko also expressed optimism that the donation by Majwe would mark the beginning of good relations between the company and his community. He said his village was small and isolated with few employment opportunities, thereby making any assistance vital.
For his part, the Village Development Committee (VDC) chairperson, Mr Ephraim Mokopakgosi applauded Majwe Mining and Ms Moswete. He said he hoped the good deed would rub off on beneficiaries and help them perform better academically.
He also appealed to Majwe Mining and its joint venture partners to consider building a shelter for the family.
A head of department at the school, Ms Boingotlo Kooitse said many learners at her school faced challenges brought about by poverty and needed assistance.
She said they had long proposed that a Remote Area Dwellers (RAD) hostel be constructed at the village so that all the underprivileged leaners could be accommodated and given proper care.
She said the lack of proper care at home ended up affecting their academic performance and making them susceptible to all kinds of abuse. Ends
