Mophane primary school in Gaborone’s Block 5 location, on August 28 received the National Education Commitment Pledge, which serves as part of schools’ code of conduct.
The pledge is a statement to be memorised and recited by learners from primary to senior secondary schools with the central message of encouraging learners to take their studies seriously.
Mr Tshepho Joseph, the author of the pledge said it was created as a more pro-active approach to cultivate and instill a strong commitment to education from grassroots.
He said the pledge embodies institutional, cultural and family values that children needed to commit to and live up to.
He said by reciting the pledge learners promise to uphold the values and principles of self- discipline, obedience, respect, dignity, integrity and honesty during their studies and examinations.
Mr Joseph indicated that the pledge was also a self-guide tool both academically, professionally and gave children memorable piece of language that they could aspire to.
The school head Ms Leah Maele said she believed that this year Standard 7s would perform better in the examinations as they would be guided by the pledge. Pupils were given a chance to recite the whole message of the pledge at the assembly to demonstrate their understanding.
The framed A3 size pledge of will be placed at the school’s head office.
The pledge was implemented in 2015 after the draft was sent to various stakeholders, for reviews and comments.
It was approved in June 2019 for pilot in South East region before the Ministry of Basic Education gave a go ahead to roll it out nationwide, thus Mophane marked the kick-start of the pilot phase, which ends in 2020.
