PTA has potential to improve results

The programme, PTA of 21st Century, has the potential to help improve declining results in schools and maximise pupils potential.
The PTA national chairperson, Mr Edward Moganana said through the programme, education mentors had been selected and together with PTA, had created a partnership which helped schools to listen to parents’ concern and for parents to learn how to improve their children’s education.
The programme, which is under the Ministry of Education and Skills Development (MoESD) is a result of a resolution from the Maduo Pitso which was called to discuss the declining performance of national examinations.
Mr Moganana said the education ministry engaged retired teachers or any individuals willing to assist.
He explained that members of the programme included parents, guardians, teachers, learner representatives, tertiary education students, unemployed graduates, youth clubs, retired teachers, retired education managers, community leaders, adult educators, VDC and the VET chairperson
He said the programme aims to develop a professional relationship with the mentee and assist them to achieve their goals. The benefits for pupils include high grades, less absenteeism, career exploration, support and encouragement of a role model.
“It also helps pupils to benefit socially, emotionally and academically, and this will lead ultimately to better educated and more productive citizens,” he said.
Furthermore, he said PTAs and education mentors were expected to work harmoniously and to take responsibility for the health of children both at home and at school for them to be in a good state to learn.
“This will go a long way in reducing bad behaviour by learners, truancy, drug and substance abuse and the number of school dropouts. If parents are involved and play their role, this will go a long way in improving results in schools,” he said.
He said PTA of 21st Century was also part of the ministry’s goal to revive parental involvement and instill the idea of education mentors in their children’s education.
It would also be used to guide the relationship between stakeholders for the benefit of education.
Mr Moganana said some achievements from the initiative included increased parents participation, improved learner retention and improved performance.
He urged parents to work with teachers and contribute to the education of their children. Ends
