Construction of Selebi Phikwe/Serule water transfer scheme is delayed by an ongoing environmental impact assessment that is expected to be completed on August 30. Bobirwa Sub-District Council chairperson, Mr Sylvester Masweu said this during the opening of the sub-council session on August 26.
Mr Masweu said the funding for the project had been approved by World Bank and was expected to commence next year.
The water transfer scheme project, which entails construction of a pipeline from Selebi Phikwe to Serule cluster, will supply villages of Mmadinare cluster namely Damochujeena, Gojwane, Moreomabele and Topisi with potable water from Selebi Phikwe Treatment Plant.
“Due to the delay of these projects, some wards in the village of Mmadinare, which are experiencing water shortage, will continue to be rationed together with the senior secondary school,” said Mr Masweu, who added that management centre also augmented efforts by bowsing water to Damochujeena.
The chairperson expressed his anxiety at the project delay, saying that the councillors eagerly awaited completion of the project ‘to see our communities being supplied with potable water.’
On other water-related developments, the Bobirwa Sub-council chairperson expressed that Thune Dam had started supplying the villages of Mathathane, Molalatau, Bobonong, Tsetsebjwe and Moletemane with potable water.
However, Mr Masweu revealed that some projects such as the construction of gravity main pipeline from Bobonong Pump Station to Lepokole had not yet started.
Another project that involves construction of 27km pipeline from Mathathane Pump Station to a ground water tank at Motlhabaneng for onward water distribution into the village has not yet started. “All these projects are currently under audit design and actual commencement of the projects will be May 2020,” said Mr Masweu.
