Stay away from corruption

26 Aug 2019

Senior assistant director for anti-corruption in the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development, Mr Itumeleng Phuthego has appealed to supervisors in the ministry to resist temptation of engaging in corrupt activities.

Instead, he encouraged them to take the lead in fighting corruption.

Officiating at the ministry’s capacity building workshop for supervisors on corruption prevention methods at Mahalapye recently, Mr Phuthego urged officers not to be silent and clean procurement processes of corrupt practices. Adhere to legal practice and refrain by all means from taking bribes, he underscored.

“Remain relevant to your duty,  be professional and true to the principles of fighting corruption,” said Mr Phuthego.

He advised them to be cautious as they were exposed to corruption from some businesses and other influential figures in the society.

Mr Phuthego further said officers assigned to sit in the tender board must declare interests when attending to tendered documents to avoid conflicts of interest and objections after awarding tenders as the situation would delay the development process.

He said the move was done to give all bidders fair judgment.

The workshop attendants were also advised to be cautious in their actions and by all means desist from engaging in issues of money laundering.

Chief financial Analyst from Financial Intelligence Agency, Ms Masego Chakwengwa said money laundering was a criminal act under section 47 of Proceeds and Instrument of Crime Act (2014).  She said money laundering was rampant and therefore increasing criminal and corrupt activities. Ends
