26 Aug 2019

Hukuntsi Sub-district councillors have commended their council chairperson, Ms Goratwamang Tlhage for her outstanding leadership throughout their five- year term in office.

Speaking during a full council session, Councillor Aidoo Leshope of Lokgwabe/Tshane said after election in 2014, they found it fit to elect a woman leader as a way of promoting gender equality in their institution.

He said the move was to promote women representation in leadership positions, adding that under the leadership of Ms Tlhage, their council worked harmoniously to promote service delivery, growth and development of their sub-district.

He advised councillors to remain thoughtful and focused to become effective and efficient in their work so as to leave a remarkable legacy at the end of their five-year term.

Cllr Leshope further said they managed to carry out many developments to transform communities, but added that due to limited resources they did not perform as they wanted.

He also said under the leadership of Ms Tlhage, despite that the council consists of different political parties; they never allowed political differences to impede their determination, as they worked together harmoniously.

Furthermore, he lauded the public officers for their commitment in work, albeit working in an economically disadvantaged area with no banking facilities and private schools.

On other issues, he encouraged the council management to fasten their belt to uproot corruption in the administrative council as that could tarnish their reputation.

He urged the council management to put stringent measures in place to guard against misuse of public funds.

Moreover, he decried late payments of police volunteers and Ipelegeng employees, adding that delayed payments affected their wellbeing.

For his part, Kang South councillor, Mr Kedifentse Mothoteng also lauded the chairperson for working together with the council secretary, as they managed to facilitate accessibility of services to many communities.

Councillor Mothoteng decried poor stocking of animal feeds and medicines by Kang based Botswana Agricultural Marketing Board.

He said government had taken a decision to subsidise animal feeds and medicines, but due to frequent unavailability of such, farmers in the locality would not benefit from the subsidy.

He noted that farmers were forced to travel as far as Hukuntsi, Jwaneng and Ghanzi to buy cattle feeds and medicines.

Another speaker, Hukuntsi West councillor, Mr Dinkimetse Mokwaleng, also appreciated the council chairperson and public officers for their good work.

He however decried shortage of staff accommodation, noting that some houses in Hukuntsi that were built through Economic Stimulus Programme had not yet been handed over.

He also urged the council secretary to engage the school heads to address the breakfast issue, as there was no uniformity in schools. In response, Hukuntsi Sub-district senior council secretary, Mr Joseph Banyatsang said the breakfast in primary schools started in April, but there were no guidelines. However, he promised councillors that they would engage with school heads across the region to map the way forward. Ends
