President proposes peace accord

25 Aug 2019

President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi to meet leaders of all political parties with proposal to  sign a peace deal going into the general election.

Speaking during a kgotla meeting in Selebi Phikwe recently, Dr Masisi said the signing of a peace accord would be a commitment that peace shall prevail during and post the election.

The President said peace was fundamental and that he would not tire from calling for it.

He appealed to residents to talk peaceful engagements to prospective candidates who canvass for their votes. “Our elections should be as peaceful as they have traditionally been,” Dr Masisi said.

Encouraging voters to exercise their democratic right wisely, he reminded them that politicians, in canvassing for votes, would come in various forms, colours and fragrances, but they should put the country’s peace ahead of everything.

Voters should choose leaders who would ensure continued existence of peace that Botswana enjoyed from the first elections, he said.

The President described an election year as a sensitive and precarious time in politics, therefore voters should be alive to politicking games.

He warned voters against politicians who would employ untruths as tactics for luring them to their side.

President Masisi reiterated that government had no intention of stopping Ipelegeng and old age pension programmes as peddled by opponents.

He also dismissed as unfounded allegations that he planned postponing the elections, adding that it was just another trick used by his rivals.

He urged all politicians to accept whatever results came their way declaring that he was ready for any outcome.

The President implored all to shape up for the unexpected.

Dr Masisi reiterated his commitment to combating corruption in all its manifestations to the bitter end. ENDS
