Ramotswa Police are investigating an accident in which eight people sustained injuries when a public transport bus collided with a Botswana Prison Service van carrying prisoners at Boatle intersection on Wednesday.
The bus was on its routine journey to Gaborone while the van was heading to Lobatse High Court, for the prisoners’ court appearance.
Ramotswa Police Traffic Division head, Assistant Superintendent Agrippa Gambule said confirmed the accident in an interview, stating that among eight people injured were three prison warders, four inmates as well as a pedestrian who was hit by the bus after it lost its balance. Asst. Supt. Gambule stated that the bus was stopped by the bridge rail.
He said the accident happened on top of the bridge, adding that it appeared there had been miscommunication between the two drivers.
Asst. Supt. Gambule said preliminary investigations indicated that the van driver did not stop at the stop sign, thinking that the bus driver heard the siren, resulting in the accident. He stated that the prison vehicle was severally impacted from the accident.
He said none of the bus passengers sustained injuries. ASP Gambule further cautioned the drivers to be vigilant on the road and to obey traffic signs. ENDS
