PSP hands over chairs to customary courts

21 Aug 2019

Dikgosi in Seolwane, Mosweu and Mokokwana will enjoy the comfort of executive chairs courtesy of the Morupisi R7 Group Foundation.

Permanent Secretary to the President (PSP), Mr Carter Morupisi, handed over the chairs to the villages’ customary courts on August 19.

In addition, Mr Morupisi handed over portraits of the President, Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi to each court.

Seolwane Customary Court received seven chairs, Mosweu kgotla two while Mokokwana court was given three chairs.

When handing over the gifts, Mr Morupisi indicated that a kgotla was the foundation for democracy and where consultations regarding socio-economic development issues were held.He said it was the culture and norm in Botswana for consultation to be made at the kgotla before laws or policies were put in place.

Therefore, it was appropriate to respect the status of chiefs.

The donation, he said,  would give dikgosi some dignity given the role they played in society.

Mr Morupisi explained that kgotla meetings were not for political discussions, adding that it was important to respect everybody’s views and not use the kgotla to humiliate, demean or degrade others.

Those doing so, he said, should be called to order.

Meanwhile, Kgosi Comet Baithapi of Mosweu appreciated the gifts and requested that the office be assisted with cabinets and tables while Kgosi Goitsekgosi Balebetse of Mokokwana appealed for the tarring of the road that led to Mokokwana via Mosweu.

Kgosi Oteng Mhaladi of Seolwane expressed gratitude for kgotla meetings, which he said allowed for discussion of issues of concern to communities.

He too was grateful for the new furniture. ENDS
