Masisi applauds Hukuntsi East VDC for self-reliance
20 Aug 2019
President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi has commended Hukuntsi East Village Development Committee (VDC) members for displaying the spirit of self-reliance.
The committee built a two and half house worth P92 000 for Ms Sebetso Obuseng.
Speaking at the handing over of the house in Hukuntsi on August 19, Dr Masisi said this was a humbling gesture, which showed the VDC’s responsibility.
He said the fact that the committee was able to identify a need in the village and acted on it showed that they were reliable care givers.
He also commended stakeholders such as Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) and BotswanaPost for collaborating with the VDC to successfully deliver the project and urged the beneficiary to take care of the house.
The VDC chairperson, Mr Stoffel Masire, said they started the project with each member contributing P200.
However, he said the money was not enough and therefore the committee had to use its savings to complete the project.
Mr Masire thanked BPC and BotswanaPost for their active role in ensuring that the project was a success and electricity was connected.
He, however, noted that due to financial constraints they could not complete plumbing works.
He urged President Masisi to ask the First Lady Ms Neo Masisi to help in that regard.
For his part, Kgosi Merapelo Tshweneyagae, said shelter was one of the basic needs in a human’s life because it gave beneficiaries a sense of dignity.
He commended the Office of the President for spearheading initiatives of housing the less privileged as well as encouraging citizens to play a role.
He urged the beneficiary to embrace the blessing as it came from good hearts.
The Member of Parliament for Kgalagadi North, calso Assistant Minister of Land Management,cWater and Sanitation Services, Mr Itumeleng Moipisi, called on other VDCs to emulate what Hukuntsi East did.
He said even though they acknowledged that there were financial challenges, the little contribution could go a long way in uplifting the lives of others.
Ms Obuseng appreciated the gift saying she was not expecting it.
She said the donation would redeem her dignity because she now had a decent electrified house. ENDS
