The Member of Parliament for Tonota South, Mr Thapelo Olopeng has donated over 100 solar power lights to Mabesekwa Primary school standard seven pupils and teachers.
Mr Olopeng also donated soccer balls and sanitary pads to the school as well as clothes to residents of the settlement.
Speaking during a recent kgotla meeting where he donated the items, Mr Olopeng who is also the Minister of Tertiary Education, Research Science and Technology said the school was one of the Remote Area Dwellers (RADS) schools performing well in standard seven examinations despite challenges such as lack of electricity.
He therefore, encouraged the pupils to use the lights for their evening studies.
Mr Olopeng had donated the same to other schools in Shashemooke and Foley.
He said the good results indicated that there was cordial working relationship between the Parents Teachers Association (PTA), teachers and the parents and appealed for such to continue.
On other issues, Mr Olopeng said Dukwi junior secondary school would continue to admit students from Mabesekwa because it was the only school with adequate boarding facilities.
He said boarding facilities at Borolong’s Tlhalogang secondary and Bonwatlou school at Serule were overcrowded.
Mr Olopeng promised to meet with the minister of Basic Education to see what could be done to address the challenge.
Residents complained that students’ performance dropped after they were admitted at Dukwi junior secondary.
Residents also complained about shortage of office furniture at the Social and Community Development office which they also said had a vehicle but no driver.
They further complained that it took long for RADs pupils to be assisted with school uniform.
Mr Olopeng assured them that they would be assisted once funds were available. ENDS
