Evangelical Lutheran Church, which on August 17 presented a P20 000 donation to Masiela Trust Fund, has been lauded for being among the organisations that have responded positively to government’s call to actively participate in the development of the country by assisting the needy.
Receiving the donation on behalf of Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Ms Botlogile Tshireletso, deputy director at the Department of Social and Community Development Ms Delic Sehunwe commended the church’s Prayer Men’s League for having chosen Masiela Trust Fund as the beneficiary of their fundraising rally.
She said the donation would go a long way in helping fulfil children’s rights to shelter, health, education and protection as spelt out in the Children’s Act.
She expressed optimism that the donation would be the beginning to a long and fulfilling relationship between Prayer Men’s League and Masiela Trust Fund.
Further, Ms Sehunwe appealed to other organisations to follow the example set by the Evangelical Lutheran Church by joining hands with government to ensure that every citizen lived a dignified life.
Reiterating government’s commitment to ensuring a dignified life for all Batswana, different stakeholders had a key role to play in realising that, she said.
With regard to orphaned and vulnerable children, she implored various organisations to make the adage that ‘it takes a village to raise a child’ a reality by contributing to efforts to create an environment that would make the children feel comfortable.
Director general of the Prayer Men’s League Mr Robert Ngubo informed the gathering that while the initial purpose of the men’s rallies, which are held every two years, was to raise funds for a specific diocese of the church, they had over the course of time evolved to include social responsibility activities.
The treasurer general Mr Simon Morule explained that the social responsibility aspect was adopted after realising that the communities in which the church existed grappled with various social ills.
Mr Morule stated that the Prayer Men’s League raised funds by several means, which include contributions of a set amount of money by each of the seven dioceses of the church.
He said the host diocese would then select an entity to be donated to during a rally, adding that the Botswana diocese had selected Masiela Trust Fund to be its beneficiary.
Like Ms Sehunwe, Mr Morule expressed hope that the donation to Masiela Trust Fund would pave way to a long standing relationship between the diocese and the organisation.
Ms Molebogeng Malomo, a beneficiary of Masiela Trust Fund’s care and support, hailed the Prayer Men’s League for having exhibited the true fatherly love by contributing towards the work of the organisation.
She similarly implored other churches to follow suit.ENDS
