Botswana Rope Skipping Federation (BRSF), which is on the final stages of registration, has received positive response from across the country.
According to the founder and president, Dr Moagi Sharp, they have already formed 18 clubs across the country.“So far we have formed 18 clubs and meetings are ongoing to elect interim committees so that these clubs could be registered. This past weekend we had elections in places such as Selebi-Phikwe, Maun, Mahalapye, Serowe and Kanye while we have scheduled more for the coming weekend in Sowa, Kasane, Tsabong and other places,” he said in an interview.
He noted that having been in the sporting industry as the Botswana Wrestling Federation president, he decided to heed advice from the International Jump Rope Federation and cape up with the initiative.
He said the main objective was to promote rope skipping as a physical exercise that could go a long way in preventing non-communicable diseases and consequently reducing medical costs.
He further said their ultimate goal was to showcase various skipping techniques and compete internationally.
“In the last 20 years that I have been involved in sport, it is my first time to see such a positive response. Batswana are so eager to be part of this new sport even the International Jump Rope Federation is impressed and awaiting our registration into the international body,” he said.
Furthermore, Dr Sharp noted that while awaiting final registration of the federation, the rope skipping activities would be held under the Botswana Wrestling Federation.
He said they were also targeting school children to ensure continuity of the sport. He urged Batswana to embrace this opportunity and join rope skipping clubs in their localities so that they could take part in this indigenous sport. He further called on men to join in large numbers and do away with the stereotypical belief that rope skipping is only for women. Additionally, Dr Sharp appealed to sponsors to support them so that they could grow and be able to represent the country on international stages. ENDS
