STIs up amid poor condom distribution
11 Aug 2019
The South East South Sub-district has experienced a decline in condom distribution and subsequent increase in the number of sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
From April to June this year, the sub-district, which is made of Ramotswa, Taung, Otse and Mogobane, recorded 558 cases of STIs.
This was against 469 STIs cases recorded for the period between January to March. During this period, 11 768 male condoms and 686 female condoms were distributed.
According to the District Health Management Team (DHMT) report for the quarter of April to June, the increase in numbers of STIs was in contradiction of continuing efforts such as health talks done at shebeens and condom distribution.
The report emphasised the need to strengthen condom distribution and condom demonstration by implementing partners.
The report also highlighted the need for effective STI treatment and strengthening of partners contact tracing as well as one on one health education.
According to the report, the implication for the increased numbers of STIs could be indicating increased risky behaviour.
With regard to condom distribution, the district report noted that some clients rejected freelt available condoms .
Therefore, the report called for improved efforts in ensuring condom availability as well as educating the public on the importance of consistent condom use and buy-in for female condom. It further called for continuous monitoring of condomsdistribution. Ends
